Brookfields School advocates delivery of pupil’s educational programmes through a multi-disciplinary approach. For pupils with complex needs, this approach is at the heart of their education.
The child’s parents are seen as an essential and integral member of this team. At Brookfields School, each pupil’s team is made up from a range of appropriate professionals such as the child's teacher, Support Assistants, Physiotherapist, Speech & Language Therapist, Occupational Therapist and Nurse. In addition, some pupils will also have involvement from the schools Family Support Worker, Autism Support Worker or a representative from the Schools Autism & Behaviour Support Services. For pupils who are part of the schools Sensory Resource, there will also be involvement from Qualified Teacher’s of the Hearing and Visually Impaired.
Each member of this team has an essential and valuable contribution to make in the identification of the learning aims for each child, as well as the delivery of those aims across all areas of the curriculum, learning opportunities and activities. Members of this team are also able to support the child in the home to ensure that there is a continuity of approach between home and school.
Physiotherapy
The overall aim of the Physiotherapy Service at Brookfields School is to achieve an integrated approach to the management of the physical needs of its pupils, bringing together parents, education staff and therapists to achieve each child’s potential.
This may be achieved by:-
- Providing an individual, specialist assessment for children who may have a Physiotherapy need.
- Working as part of the multi-disciplinary team within the school and taking a lead/supervisory role in the physical management of specific children – in schools, homes and respite centres. Liaising with education staff, parents, carers and other members of the Multi-disciplinary team re: aims/targets setting and achievement.
- Providing advice and/or programmes to follow in the classroom, PE lessons etc in order to assist education staff with the physical management of specific children and achievement of set targets.
- Providing individual treatment in school to improve gross motor skills where specialist handling and control of environment are necessary, so reducing time absent from school if the child had otherwise to attend a specialist centre or hospital.
