Language and communication skills are essential for all our pupils and we recognise that the skills developed in English promote learning across the curriculum. We want our pupils to be able to express themselves creatively and imaginatively, and to communicate effectively both verbally and non-verbally with others in a range of social situations. We teach pupils the skills they need to communicate in ways relevant to their individual needs, developing their skills in speaking and listening, reading and writing. Where appropriate, they have daily English lessons following the National Curriculum or follow cross-curricular themes which have been developed to meet the individual learning styles of pupils with more complex learning difficulties.
Pupils have access to a wide range of literature in our fiction and non-fiction libraries to enrich and broaden their experiences. We enhance the curriculum through the use of visiting story tellers, poets and theatre groups and provide opportunities for pupils to visit theatres.
We celebrate the endeavours and achievements of all our pupils and hope that they enjoy their learning. We aim to provide a happy learning environment which enables our pupils to grow in confidence and interact socially.
