The main aim of Religious Education is to encourage respect for all beliefs and help to promote the pupils’ spiritual, moral and cultural development. The work in Religious Education is largely based on West Berkshire's Agreed Syllabus, updated and amended in 2006.
Religious Education is a core area of the curriculum and it is an important subject for all the pupils and where appropriate it seeks to develop pupils’ knowledge, understanding and awareness of Christianity, along with the other main religions, namely, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Sikhism and Hinduism, in a multi-racial society. To achieve this, all pupils will access the curriculum at a level that is deemed appropriate to their learning styles, needs and motivation.
Specific aims of our Religious Education programme are as follows:
-
Pupils to become aware of themselves, developing a self image of value and worth
-
To take their place in a multi-cultural society
-
To express themselves in a way which is appropriate to their own experiences, feelings and thoughts
-
Develop relationships, showing a caring attitude and tolerance for others
-
To make their own choices and decisions
For most of the pupils in Early Years and Key Stages 1 and 2, the curriculum is presented throughout the day, through play and daily routines, with opportunities for 1:1 and group work and takes full account of personal, social and emotional development. Some pupils in Key Stage 2 have a weekly discrete lesson.
Pupils within Key Stages 3 and 4 are timetabled for 1 lesson per week. For pupils in Key Stage 5, the subject is covered through planned themed days and learning is linked to accredited courses, e.g. ASDAN.
