Brookfields School has been hailed by Lord Coe following our induction into a prestigious London Olympics 2012 education programme. We have also been welcomed into London 2012’s Get Set network in recognition of their commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic values.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) awarded Brookfields School a plaque and certificate to acknowledge our involvement in the London 2012 education programme. We are now a part of an active London 2012 community of schools and colleges across the UK and will receive access to exclusive competitions and 2012 Games related opportunities over the coming years.
Lord Coe, chairman of LOCOG, said: “When London won the right to host the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, we made a clear promise to use the power of the 2012 Games to inspire young people. I am proud to welcome Brookfields School in to the Get Set network for their exciting work around the Olympic Values of friendship, excellence and respect and the Paralympic Values of inspiration, courage, determination and equality.”
Jane Headland (Head Teacher) said: “The personal welcome from Lord Coe was itself an exceptional example to the children in that it reflected the values of the 2012 Games and the importance of every individual involved in them. At Brookfields, many of our outstanding achievements could not have been made without us championing core values that are very much in line with the Olympic values. The whole school is looking forward to the events that we have planned for the build up to the opening ceremony and we wish Lord Coe and our athletes every success.”
Pupils have been learning about the Olympics and Paralympics in preparation for the build up to 2012. As well as familiarising themselves with the feats of past Olympians, the school has created a day to day reward system based on Olympic values.
We celebrated by hosting a tag rugby tournament involving four special schools from across Berkshire; Addington, Arbour Vale, Manor Green and Tadley Horizon. The tournament was run over two divisions and students from Brookfields School gained the silver medal in both divisions.
PE teacher David Maycock, who is co-ordinating the run up to 2012, said the aim was to participate in and promote as many pan-Berkshire events as possible.
