You will have read that Lorraine Aston and Helen Edwards, two of our teachers in the Secondary School were planning a trip to Uganda to visit our partner school. Well, they have returned from a very successful trip full of stories and tales. They spent a week working alongside staff and students in our link school, Katente West. This was an amazing and eye opening experience as life in Uganda is very different from life in the UK and even more so for the pupils.
The staff of Katente West are an amazingly dedicated team who work tirelessly to ensure the 893 students receive an education of the highest quality despite having to cope with rudimentary accommodation, very limited resources and in crowded conditions. Unlike the Brookfields class groups, the average class size in Katente West is between 90 and 100, taught by one teacher. Despite this it was clear that all students wanted to learn and were keen to absorb any information given to them. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm for teaching and learning echoed between the two schools.
The aim of our link is to enable our students to gain a greater understanding of the wider world and celebrate our similarities with others across the world. The trip gave Helen and Lorraine the opportunity to deliver lessons based on the topics of Food and Sustainability and in turn bring back to Brookfields students a greater understanding and richness to what we do here.
We are keenly awaiting the arrival of Mr Sabiiti the Head Teacher of Katente West who will be landing at Heathrow this Friday. We have a very exciting programme.
Watch this space for an update on Mr Sabiiti’s visit to Brookfields School.
