MOVE Practitioners Course

At Brookfields School, we are committed to giving the best opportunities possible to all pupils through imbedding excellent practice.

For pupils with physical impairments, we have been developing the use of MOVE since 2006 and so far have had 22 MOVE Practitioners trained. MOVE is an activity based programme which uses the combined knowledge of education, therapy and family to teach severely disabled children, the skills of sitting, standing, walking and transferring to the very best of their ability.

We have been working hard to achieve MOVE’s nationally recognized Quality Mark which we anticipate being awarded at the end of this academic year.

Once we have this, we will then be working in partnership with West Berkshire LA and MOVE in becoming a MOVE Centre of Excellence. As part of the requirements of this, is to have a MOVE Trainer as part of the team here at school. The trainer will work across the authority advising, training and supporting other schools and parents on the use of MOVE. Helen Gwyther (SSA) trained as a MOVE Trainer last term and has been working hard in supporting pupils, their parents and staff at school who are working with MOVE.

Helen has just run our first in-house 2 day MOVE Practitioners Training Course which has meant that we now have 5 new MOVE Practitioners..

The five staff members who are now our newest MOVE Practitioners found the course very inspirational, and took on board the MOVE ethos of ‘movement is the foundation for learning’, What it means to be able to access the wider community, as well as all health benefits, being able to move affords.

Some of the anonymous post-course feedback:

  • Very enjoyable, informative and some interesting points raised!

  • I have found this training useful and I am looking forward to put it into practice.

  • Some of the things I’d been doing for some time, but really good to have the theory basis.

  • Very useful meaningful training.

  • Excellent course, would recommend all staff to use this method.

Helen will be running a further 2 day training course this term for 5 other member of staff. In addition to this course, we will also be running a MOVE Workshop in the evening for parents on 24th April 6.00 – 7.30pm at the school.
